Helical trajectories of swimming cells with a flexible flagellar hook

چکیده
A model bacterium with a flexible flagellar hook generically swims along helical trajectory, even when incorporating detailed hydrodynamics. bifurcation in the hook's equilibrium bending angle below critical stiffness can have dramatic effect on trajectory's pitch angle. Analytical predictions for bifurcation's dependence spontaneous curvature, shape of cell body, and flagellum geometry are provided.

Kinematics of flagellar swimming in Euglena gracilis: Helical trajectories and flagellar shapes
The flagellar swimming of euglenids, which are propelled by a single anterior flagellum, is characterized by a generalized helical motion. The 3D nature of this swimming motion, which lacks some of the symmetries enjoyed by more common model systems, and the complex flagellar beating shapes that power it make its quantitative description challenging. In this work, we provide a quantitative, 3D,...
متن کاملUndulatory and Flagellar Swimming
SYNOPSIS. We present a mathematical model and numerical method designed to study the fluid dynamics of swimming organisms. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a domain of fluid within which an organism undergoing time-dependent motions is immersed. Of interest are both the dynamics of a single organism and the relationship of its morphology to its motility properties, as well as the ...
متن کاملFlagellar Kinematics and Swimming of Algal Cells in Viscoelastic Fluids
The motility of microorganisms is influenced greatly by their hydrodynamic interactions with the fluidic environment they inhabit. We show by direct experimental observation of the bi-flagellated alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii that fluid elasticity and viscosity strongly influence the beating pattern - the gait - and thereby control the propulsion speed. The beating frequency and the wave speed...
متن کاملFlagellar waveform dynamics of freely swimming algal cells.
We present quantitative measurements of time-dependent flagellar waveforms for freely swimming biflagellated algal cells, for both synchronous and asynchronous beating. We use the waveforms in conjunction with resistive force theory as well as a singularity method to predict a cell's time-dependent velocity for comparison with experiments. While net propulsion is thought to arise from asymmetry...
متن کاملFlagellar hook protein from Salmonella SJ25.
From acid-disintegrated flagellar hooks of Salmonella SJ25 an immunochemically pure preparation of hook protein was obtained by column chromatography. The molecular weight of the protein determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis was 43,000, whereas that of SJ25 flagellin was 56,000. The amino-terminal residue of the hook protein was determined to be seryl. The amino acid composit...
